We are very sad to report that Sam Simon, the writer and producer who helped create the legendary television show “The Simpsons”, has died at age 59.

Simon was diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer in February 2013. He was overcome by the illness earlier this week and died peacefully in his home.

While The Simpson’s is what Simon is most well-known for, he had touched many lives with his activities outisde of the entertainment industry as well.

As we reported last year, when learning that he may not have long to live, Simon donated the vast majority of his fortune, $100 million, directly to charity.

Simon has donated to many causes, but one issue that is personally important to him is animal rights.

“A lot of it is selfish, I get to watch these animals that have been in concrete bunkers their whole life, I get to watch them take their first steps on grass, I get to fly my friends out. They’re dependent on us for that and so I feel that it’s my responsibility to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves,” he said.

Simon’s last days and months were filled with joy, as we was surrounded by family, friends and people who he loved.

He spoke about his experience on NBC last year, saying that “Somehow, I ended up surrounded by people that love me and take care of me and will do anything for me. It’s a good feeling. That’s called happiness.”
