Though it looks as though they will have a stage and a sound system, the team organizing the HJM is also diving into the use of technology to make the event as accessible as possible, both to those attending and to the world!
Twitter-based apps Periscope and Meerkat will enable attendees and followers to live stream the event to anyone who has the app on their phone and has a Twitter account.
People who wish to broadcast via these apps can share the feed with their followers, as well as being accessible to anyone who searches the handle @HCJusticeMarch. A special link will be given with which to access the video at a later time. Those who follow the HJM on Twitter will have more extensive access.
"This is so exciting!" says Donna Ellington, assistant director, and the one who initiated the idea. "I hope there will be many 'streamers' at the rally and that this technology makes it possible for us to have thousands of virtual attendees!"
As of July 17, the whole HJM team was beginning to learn the ins and outs of how to use these apps, some with more success than others. Dr. Bill Honigman, set to perform a song at the rally, managed to broadcast a rehearsal, but though the sound was clear, no picture appeared. Ellington succeeded in broadcasting her dogs' suppertime, but couldn't access it later. And Sue Saltmarsh, director and technophobe, admits to not even trying yet. But she will.
"I know there will be many people my age and older who will want to watch," says the 59-year-old. "So it's up to me to show them that if I can do it, anyone can!"
As with most things hi-tech, it's the young ones who will have to teach the elders. Honigman's son will undoubtedly find out where the visual is and Saltmarsh intends to rely on her two nieces.
"I've been hoping that the HJM rally would attract more young people to our cause - we definitely need their energy, ideas, and speed!" Saltmarsh says. "It would be great if they decide to come to the rally and broadcast it and in the process realize that healthcare is their issue too."
Periscope and Meerkat for iPhones is available at iTunes and android users can download them via the Google Play App store. See the “Live Streaming and the HJM” page on the HJM website for links to tutorials.
